PUC Partners with Superior Heights to Wrap Downtown Streetlight Boxes with Student Art

Sault Ste. Marie, ON (June 5th, 2025)- PUC Services Inc. (PUC) is proud to unveil four newly wrapped streetlight traffic boxes in Sault Ste. Marie’s downtown core, featuring original artwork created by students from Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School.

This creative collaboration provided students with a unique opportunity to transform everyday city infrastructure into public art.  33 students from two different art classes participated in the project, each given two weeks to develop their designs as part of a school assignment. After an initial evaluation by their teachers, the submissions were forwarded to PUC for further consideration.

Ten students were invited to present their artwork in person at the PUC office, where they explained the inspiration behind their work to a panel of judges. From these presentations, four designs were selected to be showcased on traffic boxes throughout the downtown core.

“We gave the students complete creative freedom,” said Sarah McLeod, Vice President, People, Culture & Brand of PUC Services Inc. “Our only request was that their designs reflect who we are as a company, the services we provide, and the importance of safety. The results exceeded all expectations. The talent and thoughtfulness behind these designs are truly remarkable.”

The PUC electrical box project was an incredible learning opportunity for our students to experience what it’s like to work as professional artists,” said Sarah Bingham, Visual Arts Teacher at Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School. “From developing their designs within a specific template to pitching their concepts to a panel of PUC employees, they gained valuable, firsthand insight into the artistic process. It was exciting to see their creative ideas brought to life in the community.”

This is the second time in three years PUC has teamed up with local high schools to offer students the chance to have their artwork installed on streetlight boxes in the downtown core. PUC would like to thank Sarah Bingham, Visual Arts Teacher at Superior Heights, for her participation in this project.

The wrapped streetlight boxes can be found at the following downtown locations:
