Sault Smart Grid

In 2023, PUC launched the first 'Community-Wide Smart Grid System' in Canada.

The Sault Smart Grid (SSG) provides PUC and our customers with better grid insight, improved reliability, improved planning and data, energy savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The Sault Smart Grid is delivering results for our customers. In 2024, SSG has reduced outages in Sault Ste. Marie by 638,639 minutes and saved 6,038 customers from experiencing an outage. An outage is considered anything longer than a minute. In addition, the Sault Smart Grid saw energy savings of $2.1M in 2024.

Key Technologies of the Smart Grid include:

  • SurvalentONE Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS): This platform integrates various tools, including Voltage/VAR Optimization (VVO), Dynamic Voltage Regulation (DVR), and an Outage Management System (OMS), providing real-time visibility and control over grid operations.

  • Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI): Smart meters and sensors collect detailed data on electricity usage and grid performance, enabling proactive maintenance and efficient energy distribution.

  • Distribution Automation (DA): This technology allows the grid to automatically detect and isolate faults, rerouting power as necessary to maintain service continuity.

Learn more about the Sault Smart Grid by exploring the videos and reports below.

This video focuses on the distribution automation component of the Sault Smart Grid project. It explains how PUC has implemented a self-healing grid system that can detect faults and automatically reroute power to minimize outages. This automation enhances grid reliability and reduces downtime for customers.

The PUC Distribution Smart Grid is powering the Sault Ste. Marie in perfect harmony. Learn more how the Sault Smart Grid is bringing electrifying changes to customers, businesses and industry in the community.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visits PUC Distribution in Sault Ste. Marie to launch Canada’s first community-wide smart grid—boosting reliability, improving outage response, and paving the way for a cleaner, more efficient energy future.

Welcome to the future of energy with the Sault Smart Grid. The SSG is delivering results with upwards of 2.7% energy savings through the Voltage/VAR Optimization (VVO), Dynamic Voltage Regulation (DVR) aspects of the grid.
